A Familiar Scene for DIY Builders

You solder every part carefully.
You power it on.
The light comes up.
Everything looks right.

But the radio stays silent.

This happens to almost everyone—and nearly always comes down to three tiny, fixable mistakes.

1) IC Installed Backwards

A small orientation slip that mutes the entire board

When the IC is reversed, the board can still power on, but the radio cannot tune, amplify, or output audio.

Signs:
• No sound
• No static
• Lights still working normally

Fix:
Match the notch on the IC with the semicircle on the PCB and reinsert it correctly.

2) Headphone Jack Isn’t Making Contact

Your radio may be working—the sound just never escapes the jack

A loose headphone jack is the #1 cause of silent radios.

Symptoms:
• Crackling when wiggling the plug
• Sound appearing briefly when pressed
• Slightly loose fit

Fix:
Reflow all three jack pins and ensure solid, shiny contact.

3) Cold Joint in the Tuner or Audio Section

The joint looks fine, but doesn’t actually conduct

Cold joints look dull or uneven and silently break the circuit.

Causes:
• No stations
• Only static
• Complete silence

Fix:
Heat the joint for one second and add a tiny amount of solder until shiny and round.

60-Second Restore Checklist

  • Correct IC orientation

  • Solid headphone jack solder

  • No cold joints in the tuner/audio area

Most radios start working immediately after fixing just one of these.
