1. THE ROOT CAUSES: WHY DO BRAKES SCREECH?

Brake squeak is caused by unwanted vibrations. When you press the brake pads against the spinning rotor or wheel rim, they should grip smoothly. If they slip and catch rapidly instead, it creates high-frequency vibrations that sound like a loud screech.

This vibration is usually caused by three main factors:

A. CONTAMINATION (THE #1 CULPRIT)

Road grime, chain oil, chain spray, or even fingerprint oils can get onto your brake pads, rotors, or rims. This creates a slick layer that prevents the pads from gripping smoothly, causing them to vibrate and squeak.

B. MISALIGNMENT AND LACK OF “TOE-IN”

For rim brakes, if the pads hit the flat surface of the rim completely parallel all at once, they can chatter.

For disc brakes, if the caliper is slightly crooked, one side of the pad will touch the rotor before the other, causing vibration.

For disc brakes, spray the rotors with dedicated disc brake cleaner or 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, then wipe them clean with a fresh paper towel.

For rim brakes, wipe the aluminum braking track on the wheel rim with rubbing alcohol.

STEP 2: SAND THE BRAKE PADS

Remove your brake pads. If the surface looks shiny and glazed, rub them in a figure-eight motion against a sheet of clean, fine-grit sandpaper (120 to 240 grit) resting on a flat workbench. Sand them until the shiny glaze is gone and you see a fresh, matte pad material. Clean them with alcohol before reinstalling.

Surface Refresh: Sanding removes the glazed heat-hardened layer, restoring the pad’s gripping power.

STEP 3: ADJUST THE ALIGNMENT

  • For Rim Brakes (Toe-in): Loosen the pad bolts and angle them slightly so that the leading edge (front) of the pad touches the rim about 1mm before the trailing edge (rear). This is called “toe-in” and eliminates pad chatter.
